The Pint & Cork

It was super fun to work with The Pint & Cork gastropub in Wailea, Maui. They serve up a delicious array of elevated island-style comfort foods, craft brews and specialty cocktails made with an assortment of top shelf ingredients. The atmosphere is like a cool tavern - it’s a great spot to chill, hang with friends & take in a sports game, surf contest or other artistic entertainment on one of their big screens.

Originally I met Scott Pacer (one of the owners) of the The Pint & Cork on a photoshoot for Food Network. We featured key dishes for Food Network’s online Maui Restaurant Guide. It was awesome to be invited back to create some commercial photography content for The Pint & Cork. We covered food, drinks & restaurant ambiance. The purpose of our session was to create content to publish in: Maui Time, Maui Nō Ka ’Oi, Hana Hou! (the official magazine of Hawaiian Airlines) & on a billboard at the Shops of Wailea.

I really enjoyed capturing the mood & vibe of The Pint & Cork. I worked closely with Scott & Ryan Kobel (the bar manager) on their visions for the select signature dishes & drinks they wanted to feature.

Lighting is key in food photography. Even in the morning this particular bar is dark (not much ambient light) so I had to be really creative with how I lit each scene. I chose to do some HDR (multiple exposures on a tripod) for some of the ambiance photos to achieve more dynamic range. My assistant and I also brought in multiple forms of off-camera lighting gear to light up the bar & to also frontlight, sidelight & backlight the featured dishes & drinks.

Here are some of my favorite shots from this restaurant photography session:
